The meme of fives

Thanks to Gil S, who revealed her answers to this in her blog, because I was nosy and asked her to! (Do go and read her blog. It's excellent.)

Fair's fair - here are my answers:

What was I doing 5 years ago?
Changing my surname back to the one I started with, having just endured a messy divorce and wanting to draw a firm line under it.

What 5 things are on my to-do list?
Catch up on my emails, finish the stocking fillers I'm knitting for Christmas, read some more of the Jessamyn West book I'm enjoying, see the diabetes nurse for the first time, phone my sister.

What are 5 snacks you enjoy?
Grapes, olives, cashew nuts, crisp apples, peanut butter on wholegrain toast.

What 5 things would you do as a billionaire?
Clean water, for free, for the whole world; fund ME research; free healthcare for all; solve the RSoF's financial problems at a stroke; travel, by wheelchair-friendly ship, with a carer and my son.

What are 5 jobs you've had?
Organ tuner's assistant; working in a bookshop; knitwear designer; published poet; freelance copy editor.

Heather,

Like you I found this particular meme interesting but no one tagged me. I'll answer here.

What were you doing five years ago? Pretty much what I do now except that my children were all five years younger than they are now. I was helping my daughter get settled into a career after finishing college. I was trying to get my older son ready for college and I was trying to get my youngest son, whom we homeschool, to catch up on his language skills. He's very strong in math and science but has always been very weak on the language side of things. At around this time I suggested that he try reading science fiction. It worked. His avid reading of science fiction has slowly brought about a big improvement in those language skills.

five things on my to-do list today: 1) teach my class, 2) grade the quizzes, 3) check the status of the hurricanes in the Atlantic, 4)Go to local high school for first meeting of the chess club this year, 5) help prepare weekly Tuesday night dinner for Friends and friends.

Five snacks I enjoy: ice cream, peanuts, popcorn, cherries, fruit slices (a kind of candy).

Five jobs I have had: short-order cook, carpenter's assistant, staff person at drug treatment center for heroin addicts, writer of questions for the LSAT (the standarized test for admission to Law School in the US) and college professor.

Five things I would do with a billion dollars: buy the old primitive Baptist church for use by our monthly meeting, set up a fund to pay for expenses of Friends traveling in the ministry, establish my own college, buy a vacation home at the beach, turn down summer teaching forever.

Thanks, Richard!

I'm glad the science fiction worked so well - Terry Pratchett worked for my son!

I really enjoyed reading this - thank you for taking the time to reply :)
